Benjamin Disraeli once observed that “it is much easier to be critical than correct.”
Theodore Roosevelt felt that “the man who really counts in the world is the doer, not the mere critic — the man who actually does the work, even if roughly and imperfectly, not the man who only talks or writes about how it ought to be done.”
I agree with the former and disagree with the latter.
The writer who criticises those who make decisions and take actions turns a diktat into a dialogue. News provision today is all about speed: breaking news, fastest updates, and quickest responses. Critical and comment writing does not naturally gel with this new model — it is often static and studied. It is possible in this new news economy that carefully-considered criticism and commentary on those who “do the work” could be obscured by more dynamic content.
This blog aims to bring that commentary to the front again, while at the same time offering my own opinion.
My name is Caroline Crampton. I’m currently working hard at City University’s MA in Newspaper Journalism, in between making money on the side singing Renaissance polyphony in some of London’s many, many churches.
